South Australias outlaw biker community had a
small win yesterday when
the local anti-biker Attorney-General apologised
in Parliament to outlaw bike clubs after accusing
them of barbecuing and eating a cat.
During debate last month on a ban on the consumption
of cats and dogs, Attorney-General Michael Atkinson
referred to an incident 13 years ago where bikers
barbecued and ate a cat in a public park.
Yesterday he revealed they 'probably' were
not bikers and on the menu was a fox, not a
cat.
While making light of the situation, Atkinson
offered this grudging apology.
"I apologise to the Gypsy Jokers, the
Hells Angels, the Finks, the Rebels, the Bandido's
and the Descendants and any other gangs the
Member for Unley nominates as being cut to the
quick by my remark during debate," he said.
Contributing to the backdown was the combination
of Australias national youth radio station Triple
J's relentless pursuit of the story, aided by
light hearted interviews involving South Australias
Gypsy Joker state president Steve "Horrible"
